Business laptop with 14-inch display

The HP EliteBook 840 G5 is a 14.0-inch business laptop running Windows 11 Pro. It uses an Intel Core i7 8th Gen processor at 1.80GHz with 16GB DDR4 memory and a 256GB SSD. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 drives the 1920 x 1080 non-touch screen.

Sustained workload on integrated graphics

Under continuous load the Intel HD Graphics 620 shares system memory and thermal headroom with the CPU. The 16GB DDR4 pool supports multitasking, yet prolonged heavy rendering or video encoding will throttle clock speeds to manage heat within the thin chassis.

Connectivity limits of the port selection

One USB Type-C port and two USB 3.0 ports provide peripheral bandwidth up to 5 Gbps each. The HDMI output drives a single external display at 1920 x 1080. Wired networking uses the RJ-45 port while wireless relies on the integrated WiFi adapter.

Questions about this item

How much fan noise or heat does the Core i7-8th Gen at 1.80 GHz produce during all-day use?

The 14.0 inch chassis with Intel HD Graphics 620 runs typical business workloads quietly; sustained loads will warm the 12.8 x 9.2 x 0.7 inch body but stay within normal office limits.

Which cables or peripherals must I already own to use the 1 x USB Type-C, 2 x USB 3.0 and 1 x HDMI ports?

You need a USB-C charger or dock, standard USB-A devices for the two USB 3.0 ports, and an HDMI cable for external displays; RJ-45 and 3.5 mm combo jack use common Ethernet and audio cables.

Will the 16GB DDR4 RAM and 256GB SSD work smoothly with older USB 2.0 drives and legacy monitors I keep?

Yes — USB 3.0 ports are backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices, and the HDMI output drives older 1080p or lower-resolution monitors without extra adapters.
