HP EliteBook 840 G5 14-inch business laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G5 is a 14-inch business laptop with a silver aluminium chassis. It runs Windows 10 Pro on an 8th-generation Intel Core i5-8350U quad-core processor with Intel UHD Graphics 620. The system includes 32 GB of DDR4 memory in a 16 GB x 2 configuration and a 1 TB PCIe M.2 SSD. A 1920 x 1080 non-touch FHD display and integrated webcam complete the main feature set.

Upgrade from dual-core or 8 GB configurations

Moving from a dual-core processor or 8 GB of memory to this quad-core i5-8350U with 32 GB DDR4 removes bottlenecks in multi-tab browsing, spreadsheet modelling and video conferencing. The 1 TB SSD replaces smaller 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB drives, eliminating the need for external storage during travel. Buyers who need a dedicated GPU for 3D rendering or heavier creative workloads should look elsewhere.

Sustained workload thermal behaviour

Under continuous load the i5-8350U can reach 3.6 GHz via Turbo Boost before thermal limits throttle clocks back toward the 1.7 GHz base frequency. Integrated UHD 620 graphics share system memory, so extended GPU tasks increase pressure on the dual-channel DDR4 subsystem. The compact 14.0-inch chassis relies on internal fan curves that prioritise quiet operation over maximum sustained frequency.

Questions about this item

What are the RAM slot count and module sizes used for the 32 GB DDR4 memory?

The 32 GB DDR4 memory is configured as two 16 GB modules, occupying both SODIMM slots in the laptop.

How do I install the operating system on the 1 TB PCIe M.2 SSD, and what step is often missed?

Boot from a Windows 10 Pro installation USB, select the 1 TB PCIe M.2 SSD as the target drive, and remember to enable the NVME option in BIOS so the drive is detected during setup.

Which storage drive will need replacement first, and what capacity options exist for it?

The 1 TB PCIe M.2 SSD is the only internal drive; it can be replaced with SATA or NVME M.2 SSDs in 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB capacities.
