EliteBook 850 G2 business laptop

The HP EliteBook 850 G2 is a 15.6 inch business laptop with an Intel Core i5-5300U dual-core processor running at 2.30 GHz and 8 GB of DDR3 memory. It suits professionals who need a reliable Windows 10 Home machine for office applications and web-based work. The 1366 x 768 HD non-touch display provides standard clarity for everyday tasks. Buyers who need a higher-resolution panel or dedicated graphics for creative workloads should look elsewhere.

Thermals and power in daily use

The 5th generation Core i5-5300U operates at a base frequency of 2.30 GHz and can reach a turbo frequency of 2.90 GHz during short bursts. Its low-power design helps keep heat output modest during typical document editing and browsing sessions. Fan noise remains subdued under light loads, rising only when sustained multi-core work pushes the processor toward its turbo limit. Battery life will vary with screen brightness and workload intensity.

Storage upgrade and memory headroom

A new 2 TB M.2 NVMe PCIe solid-state drive replaces the original storage, delivering fast boot times and ample space for large local file libraries. The laptop retains two memory slots with a maximum supported capacity of 16 GB, so an additional 8 GB module can be fitted if 8 GB proves restrictive. Windows 10 Home 64-bit is pre-installed, and the supplier notes a Windows 11 Pro upgrade path is available.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD and which step do people get wrong?

The drive slots into the M.2 connector at a shallow angle and is secured with a single screw; the common mistake is tightening that screw before the drive is fully seated, which can bend the PCB.

What maintenance or replacement will the 8GB DDR3 memory need later?

The laptop has two slots and supports up to 16 GB, so you can add a matching 8 GB DDR3 module or replace both with a 16 GB kit when more capacity is required.

What limit appears first under sustained load with the Intel HD Graphics 5500?

The integrated GPU shares system memory and thermal budget with the i5-5300U, so extended 3D or video work hits thermal throttling before the graphics core itself saturates.
