HP EliteBook 850 G2 15.6" laptop

This HP EliteBook 850 G2 is a 15.6" business laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-5200U dual-core processor with a base frequency of 2.20 GHz and a turbo frequency of 2.70 GHz. It comes equipped with 16GB of DDR3 memory and a new 500GB 2.5" SATA SSD. The system ships without an operating system installed.

Build quality and daily connectivity

The silver chassis houses a non-touch HD display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 driven by Intel HD Graphics 5500. Integrated Bluetooth and a webcam support wireless peripherals and video calls. Two memory slots are present, though the 16GB configuration already reaches the maximum supported capacity.

What to verify before ordering

Confirm that you can supply and install your own operating system, as none is included. Ensure your workflow suits an HD-resolution panel and integrated graphics rather than a discrete GPU. The 500GB SSD uses a 2.5" SATA interface, so any storage expansion must match that form factor.

Questions about this item

What speed does the SATA interface limit the 500GB SSD to?

The 2.5" SATA connection caps the 500GB SSD at the SATA III 6 Gb/s ceiling, so sequential reads top out near 550 MB/s in practice.

What physical drive bay does the 500GB SSD occupy?

The 500GB SSD fits in the standard 2.5" SATA bay inside the chassis; no M.2 slot is used for the primary drive.

How is the operating system installed when none is supplied?

Create a bootable USB installer for Windows or Linux, boot from it, and select the 500GB SSD as the target; the step people miss is enabling legacy/CSM boot if the installer fails in pure UEFI mode.
