SKU CH-9R7A-HBREM

12Gb/s SAS controller card with dual ports and 2GB FBWC

  • 12Gb/s SAS throughput accelerates storage arrays
  • PCIe 3.0 x8 interface connects to modern servers
  • Dual-port design enables redundant cabling
  • 2GB FBWC protects cached writes during power loss

HP P440Ar 12Gb SAS Smart Array Controller

The HP P440Ar is a 12Gb SAS Smart Array controller card designed for server environments. It connects via a PCIe 3.0 x8 interface and provides dual port SAS connectivity. The card includes 2GB of Flash-Backed Write Cache (FBWC) to protect data during power loss. It suits administrators needing hardware RAID acceleration for internal storage arrays.

Thermals noise and power draw in normal use

The controller operates within standard server thermal limits using passive cooling reliant on chassis airflow. Power consumption remains modest for a PCIe 3.0 x8 add-in card during typical RAID operations. Acoustic output is negligible as the card has no integrated fans. Ensure the server enclosure provides adequate slot airflow for sustained workloads.

Questions about this item

How do I install the HP P440Ar controller in a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot and what step is often missed?

Insert the card into a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot, secure the bracket screw, then connect the SAS cables to the dual ports; the step often missed is plugging the 2 GB FBWC module into the controller's dedicated socket before closing the chassis.

What maintenance will the 2 GB FBWC module need later?

The flash-backed write cache uses a capacitor pack that holds charge for the 2 GB buffer; after several years the pack loses capacity and should be replaced to keep write-cache protection active.
