Purpose-built ultrabook

The HP ProBook 640 G5 is a 14.0 inch Full HD IPS ultrabook powered by an Intel Core i5-8365U processor running at 1.6 GHz with 6 cores and 6 MB L2 cache. It ships with 32 GB of DDR4 memory and a 256 GB SSD, running Windows 11 Pro out of the box. The silver aluminium chassis targets professionals who need a lightweight, manageable device for daily office workloads and remote collaboration.

Thermals and acoustics

Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handles display output without a discrete GPU, keeping heat and fan noise low during typical productivity tasks. Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.1 provide wireless connectivity while the 65 W-class power delivery through the USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 1 port supplies efficient charging. The LED-backlit non-touch panel and slim-bezel design contribute to modest power draw in normal use.

Sustained-load behaviour

Under continuous multi-threaded workloads the quad-core processor can reach 3.60 GHz, but the integrated graphics and compact thermal solution limit extended heavy compute or video encoding sessions. The 256 GB SSD offers fast boot and application launch yet capacity may constrain users with large local datasets. Buyers who need more storage, a dedicated GPU or a larger 15.6 inch display should consider other configurations.

Questions about this item

How do I install the DDR4 memory and what step is often missed?

The laptop has two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots; the step often missed is seating both modules until the retention clips click on each side.

Which component will need replacement first during long-term use?

The internal lithium-ion battery will degrade after several hundred charge cycles and is the first part that typically requires replacement.

What thermal limit appears first under sustained heavy workloads?

The Intel Core i5-8365U reduces its clock speed once it reaches its maximum junction temperature, limiting performance before the chassis gets hot.
