HP ProLiant DL160 G9 1U Rack Server

The HP ProLiant DL160 G9 is a 1U rack server built for data-centre density. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2603 v3 six-core processor running at 1.6 GHz and 128 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 16 DIMM slots. Two 146 GB 15 K SAS drives and an H240 Smart HBA provide the storage foundation. Redundant hot-swap 550 W power supplies support continuous operation.

Suited for memory-bound workloads.

This configuration suits virtualisation hosts, database nodes or application tiers that benefit from the installed 128 GB maximum memory capacity. The Matrox G200 graphics controller and single low-frequency CPU make it unsuitable for workloads requiring GPU acceleration, high single-thread speed or visualisation. Buyers needing more than two internal drives should evaluate the eight-bay SFF chassis limit before purchase.

H240 Smart HBA with RAID 0, 1, 5

The onboard HP Smart HBA H240 controller manages the SAS and SATA drives with hardware RAID levels 0, 1 and 5. It delivers 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA connectivity to the eight 2.5-inch bays. This controller choice determines which drive types and redundancy schemes are available without adding a separate PCIe RAID card.

Questions about this item

Does the server come with drive trays for the eight SFF bays, or must I order them separately?

The two installed 146 GB SAS drives ship with their trays. The remaining six 2.5-inch bays are empty and trays for additional drives are not included.

With 128 GB already installed across the 16 DIMM slots, is there any room to add more memory?

The Xeon E5-2603 v3 supports a maximum of 128 GB, and every one of the 16 slots is already populated, so no further memory can be added.

The H240 controller is rated at 12 Gb/s SAS, but the supplied drives run at 6 Gb/s — what speed will the array actually deliver?

The array will operate at the 6 Gb/s limit of the installed 15 K drives; the controller’s 12 Gb/s capability only benefits faster drives added later.
