24-bay 2U rack server for dense storage workloads

The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 fits twenty-four 2.5-inch SAS drives in a 2U chassis, making it suited to environments that need many spindles in limited rack space. A single Xeon E5-2643 v3 six-core processor running at 3.4GHz and 32GB of DDR4 ECC memory handle database or virtualisation tasks that benefit from high clock speed rather than core count. Redundant 500W hot-swap power supplies keep the system running during a module failure.

SAS 6Gbps interface limits throughput per drive

The installed 146GB 15K drives and the Smart Array P440 controller operate at 6Gbps SAS, so each drive tops out around 600MB/s regardless of the controller's 12Gbps capability. RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 are supported, but rebuild times on 15K media can stretch to hours when a large array degrades. The 24-bay front cage uses the 6Gbps backplane; adding the optional rear cage does not raise the per-drive link speed.

Tool-less drive trays and FBWC simplify installation

Drives slide into the front bays without screws, and the P440's 4GB flash-backed write cache retains data during power loss without a separate battery module. Memory upgrades require matching DDR4 ECC registered modules and populating slots in sets of twelve per processor for best performance. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics provides only basic console output, so a discrete GPU is needed for any graphical workload.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 24-bay SFF model or a different bay count for the DL380 Gen9?

The 24-bay SFF chassis fits 2.5-inch SAS drives and leaves room for an optional rear cage if you need more slots later.

What does the 3.4 GHz clock on the E5-2643 v3 actually deliver in this server?

Six cores at 3.4 GHz give strong single-thread speed for database or virtualization workloads that favour frequency over core count.

How does the P440 controller's 12 Gb / 6 Gb SAS link affect real throughput?

The controller runs 12 Gb SAS to the backplane and 6 Gb to the installed 15K drives, so drive speed caps sustained transfer.
