2U rack server for dual-processor workloads

The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 fits a standard 2U rack space and ships with two Xeon E5-2609 v3 processors running at 1.9 GHz. Eight gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory are installed across the 24 available DIMM slots. This configuration targets environments that need redundant power and internal SAS storage in a compact rack footprint.

Dual 500 W supplies and hot-swap drive bays

Redundant hot-swap power supplies keep the system running if one unit fails. Eight 2.5-inch SFF bays accept SAS or SATA drives; the two installed 146 GB 15K SAS disks operate at 6 Gbps. The Smart HBA H240ar controller manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across the backplane.

H240ar controller and expansion options

The bundled H240ar provides 12 Gbps SAS and 6 Gbps SATA connectivity with hardware RAID offload. Optional universal media bay, NVMe drive cage or additional 8-bay SFF modules can be added to the remaining bay positions. No operating system is included, so the administrator chooses the hypervisor or OS.

Questions about this item

How do I install additional DDR4 memory in the 24 DIMM slots, and which slot order do people often get wrong?

Install DDR4 ECC registered modules in sets of 12 per processor, filling the slots nearest each CPU first; the common mistake is populating the second processor's slots before the first processor's 12 slots are full.

What maintenance will the two 146 GB 15K SAS drives and the H240ar controller need later?

Monitor SMART data on the 146 GB 15K SAS drives for reallocated sectors and replace any drive that shows predictive failure; the H240ar firmware should be updated when HP releases new versions.

What is the first limit reached under sustained heavy workloads with the two E5-2609 v3 CPUs and 8 GB of DDR4?

The 8 GB DDR4 capacity is the first bottleneck; memory pressure appears long before the dual 1.9 GHz six-core Xeons or the 12 Gb SAS controller reach their limits.
