ProLiant DL380 G9 2U server

The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads that need dense compute and redundant power. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 twelve-core processor running at 2.3 GHz and 96 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 24 DIMM slots.

Smart HBA H240ar SAS controller

Storage is managed by an HP Smart HBA H240ar controller providing 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA connectivity with support for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. The eight SFF drive bays accept 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives; NVMe devices can only be added to bay 2 using an optional universal media bay.

96 GB DDR4 at maximum capacity

The installed 96 GB of DDR4 already reaches the memory ceiling supported by this single-processor configuration, leaving no headroom for expansion without adding a second CPU. Two 146 GB 15 K SAS drives deliver fast sequential throughput for operating-system or scratch volumes, but capacity-constrained databases will require additional drives or the optional 16- or 24-bay upgrades.

Questions about this item

Should I add a second E5-2670 v3 or expand the 96GB DDR4 first?

The system board has 24 DIMM slots and supports up to 96GB with one processor; adding the second CPU unlocks the remaining 12 slots and raises the maximum to 3TB.

What does the 12-core 2.3GHz Xeon deliver for virtualization?

Twelve physical cores and 24 threads handle multiple VMs simultaneously, and the 96GB DDR4 provides ample memory for typical consolidation ratios.

How does the H240ar controller limit the 146GB 15K SAS drives?

The H240ar connects at 12Gb/s SAS, but the installed drives are 6Gb/s models, so the array runs at the slower 6Gb/s link speed.
