ProLiant DL380 Gen9 2U rack server

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads that need redundant power and internal storage expansion. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processor running at 1.9 GHz and 4 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. Two 500 GB 7.2 K SATA drives and a B140i software RAID controller provide baseline storage. The chassis supports a second processor and additional drive bays for growth.

B140i software RAID SATA-only limits

The onboard B140i controller manages RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 across SATA drives only; it does not support SAS or NVME devices. Eight 2.5-inch SFF bays are populated with the two included drives, leaving six bays free for additional SATA HDDs or SSDs. Optional universal media bay, NVME drive options, or extra SFF cages can occupy bay 2 and bay 3, but the B140i itself remains restricted to SATA RAID functionality.

Single Xeon E5-2609 v3 6-core CPU

This unit includes one E5-2609 v3 processor with six cores at 1.9 GHz; the socket count allows a second identical CPU to reach 12 cores total. Memory runs at up to 2400 MT/s depending on the installed processor, and the 24 DIMM slots support up to 3 TB when both sockets are filled. Buyers who need higher core counts, faster clock speeds, or larger initial memory must add a second processor and additional DDR4 modules.

Questions about this item

Should I add a second Xeon E5-2609 v3 or upgrade to a higher-core model for more throughput?

The motherboard supports up to two processors with a combined maximum of 36 cores, so a second E5-2609 v3 adds six cores while a V3 or V4 chip with more cores raises the ceiling further.

With only 4 GB of DDR4 installed, what real-world workloads can this server handle out of the box?

The single 4 GB module is enough for a lightweight hypervisor or a basic file and print role, but any database, virtualisation host or analytics task will need additional DDR4 ECC registered DIMMs to reach the 3 TB limit.

The B140i controller is SATA-only — does that cap drive speed or prevent SAS and NVMe upgrades?

B140i handles SATA RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 at 6 Gbps; SAS and NVMe drives require a different controller, so adding them means installing a supported HBA or RAID card in a PCIe slot.
