HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 2U server

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads that need dense compute and storage in a standard cabinet footprint. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 eight-core processor running at 2.4 GHz and 8 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. The chassis provides 24 small-form-factor drive bays and two 500 W redundant hot-swap power supplies for continuous operation.

SAS 6 Gbps interface and RAID limits

The installed Smart Array P440 controller with 4 GB flash-backed write cache connects to the drives over a 6 Gbps SAS link, so each 600 GB 15 K rpm disk is capped at that throughput. RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 are supported, but the two-drive configuration restricts practical choices to RAID 0 or RAID 1 unless more drives are added. The controller’s 12 Gbps internal speed cannot be used by the current 6 Gbps drives.

Redundant power and 24-bay expandability

Dual 500 W hot-swap supplies allow one unit to fail without downtime, and both can be replaced while the server runs. Twenty-four front-accessible 2.5-inch bays let administrators add capacity or performance incrementally without removing the server from the rack. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics chip provides basic console output only, so a discrete GPU would be required for any graphical compute tasks.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the single E5-2630 v3 configuration or add a second processor?

The board supports up to two processors and 24 DIMM slots; adding a second CPU doubles the core count to 16 physical cores and enables all memory channels.

What does the 2.4 GHz base clock mean for actual throughput?

Eight cores at 2.4 GHz provide 16 threads with Hyper-Threading, giving strong multi-threaded performance for virtualisation and database workloads.

How does the P440 controller's 12 Gb / 6 Gb SAS link affect the installed 600 GB 15K drives?

The drives run at 6 Gb/s, so the controller's 12 Gb/s capability is reserved for faster SAS SSDs or future drive upgrades.
