Ready for the rack

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2643 v3 six-core processor running at 3.4 GHz and 16 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. Two 600 GB 15K SAS drives and an H240ar controller provide immediate storage. Dual 500 W hot-swap power supplies deliver redundancy from day one.

Installation notes

The chassis slides into a standard 2U rack space and the 8 SFF drive bays accept 2.5-inch trays that are included with the drives. Memory populates up to 24 DIMM slots, twelve per processor, so adding capacity later means matching DDR4 registered modules up to 2400 MT/s. A second processor can be fitted to reach the 36-core maximum, but the board and cooling must support the additional socket. The H240ar handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 without a separate cache module.

Interface limits

SAS drives connect at 12 Gb/s through the H240ar while SATA devices run at 6 Gb/s. The eight-bay backplane caps raw drive count unless a second or third bay kit is added for 16 or 24 SFF positions. NVMe drives are only supported in bay two with the appropriate riser. Total memory ceiling sits at 3 TB when both processor sockets are populated with 64 GB DIMMs. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics output is limited to basic management console use.

Questions about this item

How do I confirm the H240ar controller sees both 600 GB SAS drives after installation?

The H240ar BIOS utility will list the two 600 GB 15K SAS drives on its 12 Gb SAS ports once the server posts.

What ships inside the 2U chassis and what must I source separately?

One E5-2643 v3 CPU, 16 GB DDR4 ECC RDIMMs, two 600 GB 2.5" SAS drives with trays, dual 500 W hot-swap PSUs, and the H240ar controller are included; OS, extra CPUs, additional DIMMs, NVMe kits or extra drive cages are not.

Which memory capacity matches the installed 16 GB and leaves room to reach the 3 TB ceiling?

The system arrives with 16 GB DDR4-2400 ECC registered across 24 slots; add 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB RDIMMs per processor to scale toward the 3 TB maximum.
