2U rack server with a 3.4 GHz six-core Xeon, 8 GB DDR4, eight 146 GB 15K SAS drives and an H240ar RAID controller
The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads that demand consistent throughput. A single Intel Xeon E5-2643 v3 six-core processor running at 3.4 GHz provides 12 threads for virtualised or database tasks. Eight gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory are installed across the 24 available DIMM slots. The platform supports a second processor for up to 36 total cores when the workload grows.
Eight 146 GB 15K 2.5-inch SAS drives fill the small-form-factor bays and connect through the Smart HBA H240ar controller, which handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Dual 500 W redundant hot-swap power supplies keep the system running during a module failure. The eight-bay chassis can be expanded with additional SFF cages or an NVMe option in the second bay, while the integrated Matrox G200eH2 graphics handles basic console output.
The H240ar delivers 12 Gb SAS and 6 Gb SATA connectivity without a separate RAID card, simplifying cable routing in the 2U enclosure. Twenty-four DDR4 slots allow memory to scale to 3 TB when both processor sockets are populated, using 4 GB to 64 GB modules at up to 2400 MT/s. No operating system is included, so the administrator chooses the hypervisor or OS that matches the deployment. Buyers who need a second processor, larger drives or pre-loaded software will need to source those separately.

Other versions of this model
The H240ar controller runs at 12 Gb SAS, while the installed drives are 6 Gbps units, so the array is limited to 6 Gbps per drive.
The chassis occupies 2U of rack height and uses eight 2.5-inch SFF bays, which are fully populated by the 146 GB SAS drives.
The H240ar is a dedicated internal module that plugs into its own slot on the system board; the step often missed is cabling it to the backplane before closing the chassis.
