The HPE 508118-001 is a 256 MB cache module designed for Smart Array P700M controllers in supported servers. It provides additional write-back cache memory to improve storage array performance. This accessory targets administrators upgrading controller cache capacity in existing HPE ProLiant deployments.

Upgrading from lower cache configurations

The module replaces a smaller or absent cache on the P700M controller, enabling write-back caching where write-through was previously required. The jump is worth it when workloads involve frequent random writes or RAID 5 and 6 rebuilds that benefit from the extra 256 MB buffer. Controllers already equipped with a larger cache will not see further gains from this part.

Installation notes and common issues

Installation requires powering down the server, opening the chassis, and seating the module into the dedicated cache slot on the P700M board. The most common issue is forgetting to enable the new cache in the controller firmware after the hardware is fitted. Another frequent problem occurs when the module is inserted into an incompatible controller slot, preventing the server from posting.
