Hot-swap cages: bays, interface and backplane

A drive cage turns front 5.25-inch bays into hot-swap drive slots, for example three 5.25-inch bays into four or five 3.5-inch slots. Look at the interface: a SAS/SATA 6.0 Gbps backplane takes both drive types but needs matching controller ports and cables, and trayless designs slot bare drives in directly while tray designs need a carrier per disk. A cage with its own fan adds noise and needs a free power connector, so check both.

Coolers, fans and bridges must match socket or slot spacing

CPU coolers are listed by supported socket, such as Intel LGA 2011 and 2066, AMD AM4 or SP3, and by rack height; a cooler for 2U will not clear a 1U lid. Match the TDP rating to the processor. Replacement fans are chosen by frame size, 60 mm or 92 mm, and connector, and PWM versions let the board control speed. NVLink bridges must match the card model and slot spacing. Blanking panels, listed in half-U and 1U sizes, fill empty rack space so cold air is not short-circuited.

Questions about Hot-Swap Drive Cages and Server Add-Ons

Will SATA drives work in a SAS hot-swap cage?
Yes, in a cage with a SAS/SATA backplane, provided your controller supports SATA. The reverse is not true: SAS drives need a SAS controller and do not work through a SATA-only connection.
Why do I need blanking panels?
Empty rack units let hot exhaust air flow back to the front of equipment. Blanking panels block those gaps so cold air passes through the devices. They are listed by height, such as 1U, to fill the exact opening.
How do I choose a replacement server fan?
Match the frame size, thickness, connector and PWM or voltage control to the original part. A fan with higher airflow can be louder and draw more current than the fan header supports, so compare the ratings.
