The HPE Smart Array P840 is a 12Gb/s SAS controller designed for internal server storage. It connects via a PCI Express 3.0 x8 host interface and provides two internal SAS ports. The card includes 4 GB of flash-backed write cache to protect data during power loss. It suits administrators adding RAID capability to compatible HPE ProLiant servers.

The controller operates at 12Gb/s over two internal SAS ports and supports Serial ATA/600 drives. This port count and speed determine how many drives can be attached and the maximum throughput per drive. Systems needing more than two internal SAS connections or external port expansion will require a different controller or an additional HBA.

4 GB flash-backed write cache and RAID levels

The 4 GB FBWC module enables write-back caching across RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60, ADM and ADM10 configurations. It comfortably handles mixed read-write workloads on small to medium drive arrays. Performance may become constrained when scaling beyond the two internal ports or when cache-intensive workloads exceed the 4 GB buffer capacity.
