The HPE Juniper Networking MPC5E-100G10G is a modular port concentrator designed for MX240, MX480, MX960, MX2010 and MX2020 routers. It delivers full-scale Layer 2 and Layer 2.5 features with reduced-scale Layer 3 capabilities. Service providers and enterprises expanding high-density edge or core deployments can add this card to increase 100 Gigabit and 10 Gigabit connectivity.

Build Quality and Connectors

The module measures 31 by 25 by 6.5 inches and weighs 22 pounds, fitting standard chassis slots without additional brackets. Two 100 Gigabit Ethernet ports and four 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports accept pluggable optics that are sold separately, so daily operation involves sourcing and inserting the appropriate transceivers for each link. Airflow follows the chassis design, and power is drawn from the router midplane.

Scaling Limits That Guide Selection

The card supports up to 2 million routes in the forwarding information base, up to 6 million routes in the routing information base and up to 32 Layer 3 VPN instances per module. It requires the enhanced Switch Control Board MX-SCBE or MX-SCBE2 on MX240, MX480 and MX960 platforms, and the Switch Fabric Board on MX2010 and MX2020 platforms. Buyers needing full Layer 3 scale or legacy SCB compatibility must choose a different line card.
