A wireless LAN controller that scales from 802.11b to 802.11n without hardware upgrades and supports fast roaming with VSC-based QoS and security
The HPE ProCurve MSM710 Mobility Controller is a wireless LAN controller designed for branch offices and large organisations. It manages access points and delivers fast-roaming with ultraspeed hand-offs. The platform scales from IEEE 802.11b to 802.11n without requiring expensive controller upgrades. Virtual Service Communities provide independently configurable QoS, authentication, encryption and VLAN support.
No thermal, acoustic or power consumption data is provided for the MSM710 controller. The supplier documentation focuses on network scaling, security features and mobility services rather than physical operating characteristics. Buyers who need specific heat output, fan noise levels or wattage figures should consult the manufacturer's technical datasheet.
The unit connects to the wired network using Gigabit Ethernet ports as its sole uplinks. This interface determines the maximum throughput available to managed access points and the backbone capacity for client traffic. Environments that require multi-gigabit or 10 Gigabit uplinks will find the controller's wired interface a limiting factor.

Connect the Gigabit Ethernet uplinks to the network core, power the unit, then configure each Virtual Service Community with its own QoS, authentication, encryption and VLAN settings before attaching access points; skipping the per-VSC configuration is the step most often missed.
Firmware updates are the only recurring maintenance; apply them through the management interface to keep AAA, stateful firewall and mutual AP authentication current, and replace the controller only if hardware failure occurs.
The Gigabit Ethernet uplink capacity is the first bottleneck during sustained high-density traffic, because all VSC tunnels and fast-roaming hand-offs share the same physical ports.
