HPE Smart Array P830 SAS Controller

The HPE Smart Array P830 is a full-height, half-length PCIe 3.0 x8 RAID controller with 4 GB flash-backed write cache. It provides 16 physical lanes supporting 12 Gb/s or 6 Gb/s SAS and SATA protocols for select HP ProLiant Gen8 rack and tower servers.

Suited for administrators adding internal SAS

This card delivers hardware RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and Advanced Data Mirroring or Guarding. It is not for systems lacking a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot, for environments requiring external SAS connectivity, or for deployments needing more than two internal SAS ports.

Two internal SAS ports with 4 GB FBWC

The controller includes exactly two internal SAS ports and a flash-backed cache module. That port count and cache size are the primary factors when matching this card to a specific drive-count or data-protection requirement.

Questions about this item

Does my server have a PCI Express 3.0 x8 slot for the HPE P830?

The controller installs in a full-height, half-length PCIe 3.0 x8 slot, so the host server must provide that exact slot type and physical clearance.

Can the P830 connect to my existing 6 Gb/s SAS or SATA drives?

Each of the 16 lanes supports 12 Gb/s or 6 Gb/s SAS and SATA, so legacy 6 Gb/s drives attach directly to the two internal SAS ports without adapters.

How do I verify the 4 GB flash-backed cache is active after installation?

During POST the Smart Array option ROM reports the FBWC module status and capacity, and the HPE Smart Storage Administrator utility shows the cache as healthy and enabled.
