HPE ProCurve J8705A expansion module

This HPE ProCurve J8705A module adds 20 copper ports and four SFP slots to compatible zl-series switches. It is built for network administrators who need to extend wired connectivity in a campus or branch office.

Twenty RJ-45 ports with PoE and four mini-GBIC slots

Each RJ-45 interface supports 10, 100 and 1000 Mbps over twisted pair and delivers Power over Ethernet for phones, cameras or access points. The four SFP (mini-GBIC) expansion slots accept fibre or copper transceivers for uplinks or cross-connects.

Upgrades zl chassis with high-density PoE access

The module fits HP ProCurve 5412zl, 5412zl-96G, 5406zl, 5406zl-48G and 3500yl-24G-PWR switches. It is not suited for environments that require higher port densities or non-PoE copper-only line cards.

Questions about this item

What speed does the RJ-45 10/100/1000Base-T interface cap at in practice?

Each of the 20 ports negotiates up to 1000 Mbps over twisted-pair copper, so the practical ceiling is 1 Gbps per port.

What chassis slot and physical space does the J8705A module need to fit?

It occupies one module slot in a compatible zl-series chassis such as the 5406zl or 5412zl and requires no extra rack units beyond the switch itself.

How is the module installed, and which step do people often miss?

Power down the chassis, slide the module into an empty zl slot until the ejector levers latch, then secure both captive screws; the step most often missed is tightening those screws to guarantee electrical contact.
