RJ45-DB9 DCE Female Adapter

The HPE Q5T64A connects a serial console server port to the DB9 serial interface on a server, switch or router. It enables administrators to manage headless UNIX, Linux or Windows systems and network gear from a single IP address using SSH or telnet.

Passive Serial Link

The adapter adds no active circuitry, so it draws no power and produces no heat or noise. Signal integrity depends on the cable length and the console server port driving the connection.

Rack Console Integration

When used with HPE Enterprise Serial Console Servers, the adapter helps consolidate access for 16 or 48 devices in one rack unit. It supports remote reboot, re-image and LDAP authentication even if the primary data network is unavailable.

Questions about this item

How do I connect this RJ45-DB9 DCE Female Serial Adapter to a server for remote console access?

Plug the RJ45 end into the HPE Enterprise Serial Console Server port and the DB9 end into the server serial port; the common mistake is using a straight-through cable instead of the required null-modem pinout for DCE-to-DTE links.

Will the DB9 connector or RJ45 jack wear out after repeated insertions in a rack environment?

The adapter is a passive mechanical component with no moving parts; under normal rack use the gold-plated contacts and moulded strain relief are rated for the life of the console server, so no scheduled replacement is needed.

How many of these adapters can I use before hitting the port limit of a single console server?

Each HPE Enterprise Serial Console Server supports 16 or 48 attached devices; a 16-port unit takes up to 16 adapters, while a 48-port unit takes up to 48 adapters per IP address.
