IBM 8 GbE Fibre Channel Expansion Card

The IBM 44X1943 QMI3572 is a PCIe optical Fibre Channel interface card designed for servers and workstations that require direct SAN connectivity. It targets IT professionals building or expanding enterprise storage networks. The card uses a CFFH form factor to fit compatible low-profile or full-height slots. Buyers needing copper-based Ethernet or InfiniBand interfaces cannot use this product.

Optical FC PCIe Interface Card

This expansion card installs into an available PCIe slot and connects to fibre-optic cabling for 8 GbE Fibre Channel traffic. It offloads storage networking from onboard ports and frees motherboard I/O for other peripherals. The optical interface requires matching SFP modules and duplex fibre patch cords, which are not included. Systems without a free PCIe lane or appropriate optical transceivers will not support this card.

Questions about this item

Will the 8 Gb/s Fibre Channel link saturate before the PCIe bus becomes a bottleneck?

The card runs at 8 Gb/s over optical Fibre Channel and connects through a PCIe slot, so sustained throughput is limited by the 8 Gb/s line rate.

How much heat does the 44X1943 generate when the optical transceiver runs continuously?

The adapter is a low-profile CFFH card with an optical FC interface and no onboard fan, so it relies on chassis airflow for cooling.
