1 TB 2.5″ Near Line SATA drive

The IBM 81Y9731 is a 1 TB 2.5 inch Near Line SATA hard drive spinning at 7200 RPM with a 6 Gb/s interface. It ships new in a hot-swap tray and is intended for server and storage array deployments. The 2.5 inch form factor fits standard SFF drive bays. Condition is new from the supplier.

Thermal and power profile in normal use

The 7200 RPM spindle and Near Line SATA interface draw modest power during typical read and write workloads. Acoustic output remains low enough for rack-mounted server environments. No active cooling beyond normal chassis airflow is required for standard operation.

Hot-swap tray included

A hot-swap tray is bundled so the drive can be inserted or removed without powering down the enclosure. This simplifies maintenance and capacity expansion in compatible servers. Packaging may vary between retail and OEM versions.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 81Y9731 drive and its hot-swap tray in a 2.5" bay?

Slide the drive into the included hot-swap tray until it clicks, then insert the tray into the server bay until the latch engages; the SATA connector mates automatically with the backplane.

What maintenance or replacement will the 1TB 7200 RPM drive need over time?

The mechanical drive has no user-serviceable parts; monitor SMART attributes for reallocated sectors and replace the unit when the drive reports imminent failure.

What limit appears first on the Near Line SATA drive during sustained write workloads?

The 7200 RPM spindle speed and 6Gb/s SATA link cap sustained throughput, so sequential write performance plateaus at the drive's native media rate.
