Capacity and Interface

This new IBM internal hard drive delivers 4000GB of storage on a 3.5in SAS 6Gbps interface spinning at 7200RPM. It includes a system caddy for direct installation in compatible bays. The unit weighs 2.0 pound and carries the model number HUS724040ALS640.

Who It Suits

Server and workstation builders who need a 3.5in SAS drive with a 6Gbps link and a supplied tray will find this unit ready to deploy. Buyers whose systems lack a SAS controller or cannot accept a 3.5in form factor should look elsewhere.

Deciding Specification

The single specification that decides fit is the 3.5in SAS 6Gbps interface; the host must provide a matching SAS backplane or controller and a 3.5in bay that accepts the included caddy.

Questions about this item

What is the rotational speed limit that appears first during sustained write workloads on the 7200RPM platters?

The drive spins at a constant 7200RPM, so sustained throughput is bounded by that rotational speed and the 6Gbps SAS link.

How much heat and noise does the 3.5" SAS mechanism produce when running continuously in a server chassis?

The 2.0 pound unit uses a standard 3.5" SAS motor; expect typical enterprise drive acoustics and warmth that a normal server airflow path handles.

Which host interface and caddy must already be present for the HUS724040ALS640 to install and operate?

A 6Gbps SAS backplane or HBA plus a 3.5" drive bay that accepts the included SYSTEM caddy/tray are required.
