450 GB 15 000 RPM SAS hard drive

This new IBM ST3450857SS is a 3.5 inch internal hard drive built for enterprise servers and storage arrays. It spins at 15 000 RPM and connects through a 6 Gbps SAS interface. A system storage caddy is included for direct installation into compatible bays.

Suits high IOPS workloads, not capacity-first builds

Database servers, transactional applications and virtualisation hosts benefit from the low latency of 15 000 RPM SAS. Workstations or NAS units that prioritise raw terabytes over response time should consider larger, slower drives instead.

6 Gbps SAS interface decides compatibility

The drive requires a backplane or controller that supports 3.5 inch SAS at 6 Gbps. Systems limited to other interfaces cannot accept this drive, and no adapter is included.

Questions about this item

Will the 3.5" SAS 6Gbps interface on the ST3450857SS work with my existing SAS backplane?

Yes, the drive uses a standard 3.5-inch SAS 6Gbps connector, so it will plug directly into any compatible SAS backplane or controller that supports that speed and form factor.

How can I confirm the 15000RPM drive is running correctly after installation?

The system BIOS or RAID controller should detect the ST3450857SS at its full 450GB capacity and report a 6Gbps link speed; SMART data will show the spindle speed as 15000RPM.

Does the 9FM066-039 part number include the SYSTEM STORAGE caddy or tray?

Yes, the supplied unit ships with the IBM SYSTEM STORAGE caddy or tray already attached, so no separate mounting hardware is required for compatible bays.
