Purpose-built adapter for Gen-Z 1C EDSFF SSDs
This adapter connects a Gen-Z 1C EDSFF solid-state drive to a U.2 PCIe 4.0 host interface. It is intended for system integrators and datacentre technicians who need to validate or deploy EDSFF storage in existing U.3 backplanes without redesigning the chassis.
Hot-plug power protection and signalling limits
A built-in 12 V hot-plug power IC with eFuse protection manages insertion and removal under load. The board forwards SMB_CLK, SMB_DATA, PWRDIS and DualPortEn signals, while four status LEDs report 12 V power ready, Gen-Z SSD activity, PRSNT0# presence and 3.3 Vaux readiness. If the host does not supply 3.3 Vaux, the JP1 header must be configured on the adapter itself.
Replaces custom interposers
The design consolidates U.3 SFF-8639 male and EDSFF 1C connectors onto a single PCB that meets NVM Express 1.2, PCIe 4.0, SFF-TA-1001 Rev1.1, SFF-TA-1002 Rev1.3, SFF-TA-1006 Rev1.4 and Gen-Z Scalable Connector Rev1.1 specifications. The jump is worthwhile when a standardised, compliant hot-plug path is required instead of a one-off mechanical shim or an unqualified converter.

Questions about this item
Should I pick this adapter for a Gen-Z 1C EDSFF SSD or a different form factor?
This adapter is built specifically for Gen-Z 1C EDSFF SSDs and provides a U.3 SFF-8639 male connector on the host side.
What does the PCIe 4.0 rating mean when the adapter is installed in a server?
It supports PCI Express Base Specification Rev 4.0, so the link can run at Gen 4 speeds provided the host, SSD and cabling all meet the same revision.
Which interface standards does the adapter comply with and what do they limit in practice?
It complies with SFF-8639 Rev 3.0, SFF-TA-1001 Rev 1.1, SFF-TA-1002 Rev 1.3, SFF-TA-1006 Rev 1.4 and Gen-Z Scalable Connector Rev 1.1, capping the mechanical, electrical and pin-out requirements to those revisions.
