Compact 4U rackmount server chassis

The iStarUSA D400-6SE-B6SA-PBK is a 4U rackmount server chassis designed for environments that need dense storage in a short depth. It suits system integrators building file or backup servers where hot-swap access and multiple drive types are required.

Practical limits of the drive bay layout

The chassis provides six hot-swap bays, two external 5.25" bays, two external 3.5" bays and two internal 3.5" bays. Seven expansion slots are available for add-in cards. A single 80mm fan handles airflow, so thermal headroom is limited for high-power configurations.

Installation notes and common issues

The compact 4U form factor fits standard racks but leaves little room for long cards or large CPU coolers. Cable routing around the hot-swap backplane can be tight, and the single 80mm fan may need supplemental cooling for heavy workloads.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the version with six hot-swap bays or the one with only internal 3.5" bays?

This model includes six hot-swap bays plus two internal 3.5" bays, so you get removable access and fixed storage in the same chassis.

How much usable storage space does the six-bay hot-swap cage add to a 4U build?

The cage holds six 3.5" drives and sits alongside two fixed 3.5" bays and two 5.25" bays, giving eight 3.5" slots total.

Does the single 80mm fan meet the cooling needs of a fully populated 4U server?

One 80mm fan provides baseline airflow; high-density or high-wattage builds usually need additional fans or a different cooling strategy.
