Tenor Ukulele with All-Mahogany Body

The Kala KA-TEM is a tenor-scale acoustic-electric ukulele built entirely from exotic mahogany for the top, back, and sides. It is designed for players seeking a warm, balanced voice with strong projection in a traditional tenor format. Quality workmanship and ultra-stable die-cast tuners ensure reliable performance for stage or studio use. The natural satin finish highlights the wood grain while black binding adds visual definition.

Upgrade from Laminate or Smaller Models

This instrument replaces entry-level ukuleles that use laminate woods or smaller concert and soprano sizes. The jump is worth it when a musician needs the deeper resonance and increased fretboard space of a solid all-mahogany tenor body. Aquila Nylgut strings come fitted, delivering consistent intonation and a mature tone straight from the case. Builders needing a cutaway or onboard preamp controls should look elsewhere.

Sustained Playability and Tuning Stability

Under extended playing sessions the mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard maintain comfortable action without sharp fret ends. Die-cast tuners hold pitch reliably through temperature shifts common in venue environments, reducing the need for constant retuning. The silver nickel frets resist wear from daily practice, preserving clear note articulation over time. The satin finish prevents the sticky feel that gloss coatings develop during long sets.

Questions about this item

What case dimensions suit the tenor-sized body and Aquila Nylgut string tension?

A tenor-specific case or gig bag is required; the all-mahogany body with satin finish and black binding follows standard tenor proportions, so any quality tenor case will accommodate the instrument without forcing the neck or stressing the die-cast tuners.

How do I set up the die-cast tuners and Aquila Nylgut strings so the ukulele stays in tune?

Stretch each new Aquila Nylgut string gently after threading through the die-cast tuners, then tune up to pitch in several passes over the first day; the silver-nickel frets and rosewood fingerboard settle quickly, and the stable mahogany neck keeps relief consistent once the strings stabilise.

When should I plan a fret dress or tuner replacement on this tenor ukulele?

Silver-nickel frets on a rosewood board typically need a light level-and-crown after several years of regular play; the sealed die-cast tuners are maintenance-free unless a gear slips, at which point the individual tuner can be swapped without modifying the mahogany headstock.
