What this charger does

The Kastar NP-FM50 LTD2 is a dual-bay USB charger designed for Sony InfoLITHIUM NP-FM and NP-QM series batteries. It accepts two packs at once and shows charge level and status on an integrated LCD panel. Power comes from any 5 V 2–3 A USB source through Micro-USB or USB-C, and a Micro-USB cable is included. The unit measures five by three by one inches and weighs little, so it fits easily in a camera bag.

Who it suits and who it does not

Videographers and photographers who carry several compatible Sony batteries and want to recharge both from a power bank, wall adapter or laptop will find this convenient. It is not for users who need to charge battery types outside the listed NP-FM and NP-QM models, nor for anyone who requires an AC mains cable in the box because only USB input is provided.

The specification that decides fit

Compatibility is limited to the exact Sony battery part numbers listed: NP-FM30, NP-FM50, NP-FM55H, NP-QM50, NP-QM51, NP-FM70, NP-FM71, NP-QM71, NP-QM71D, NP-FM90, NP-FM91, NP-QM91 and NP-QM91D. If your pack carries a different model code this charger will not work with it.

Questions about this item

How many batteries can the Kastar NP-FM50 LTD2 charge at once via its USB interface?

The charger powers two batteries simultaneously, delivering 8.4 V at 800 mA per slot whether one or both bays are occupied.

What physical clearance does the 5-by-3-by-1-inch charger need on a desk or in a bag?

It occupies a 5 x 3 x 1 inch footprint, so allow at least that much flat space plus room for the Micro-USB or Type-C cable and battery plates.

Which step do users often miss when swapping battery plates for different Sony models?

Align the replacement plate’s contacts with the charger’s pins, press firmly until it clicks, then confirm the LCD shows the new battery type before inserting cells.
