Suits families and casual outdoor groups

These radios suit families, hikers, campers or road-trip groups who want simple, licence-free voice contact over short distances. Buyers who need longer range, waterproof submersion ratings, or compatibility with business-band equipment should look at other models.

Sixteen-channel FRS frequency band

The single specification that decides fit is the 16-channel FRS allocation; it fixes the legal power limit and determines whether the radios can talk to existing FRS gear on matching channels and CTCSS codes.

Questions about this item

How many channels does the RT22 offer and is that enough for family trips?

The RT22 provides 16 FRS channels, which is the standard set for licence-free use and covers typical family road trip, camping or hiking groups.

What does the 2-mile range mean once I am outdoors with buildings or trees around?

The quoted 2 miles is a best-case figure on open ground; in real terrain with hills, woods or buildings the usable distance will be shorter, often under a mile.

The radio uses the FRS band — what does that cap in practice?

FRS limits transmit power to 2 watts and locks the unit to 16 fixed channels, so you cannot access GMRS repeaters or higher-power modes.
