Low-profile VHF antenna for taxi

The Laird ETRA1550 is a unity-gain Phantom antenna built for 155-160 MHz VHF operation. Its stealth design uses patented Field Diversity circuitry to provide both vertical and horizontal polarization. The low silhouette suits roof mounting on emergency and commercial vehicles.

60-watt power limit and 17-foot RG58A/U cable run

Maximum input power is rated at 60 watts, so the antenna cannot be paired with higher-output transmitters. The supplied 17-foot RG58A/U coaxial cable sets a fixed reach from the roof to the radio. Signal loss over that length is inherent to the cable type at VHF frequencies.

NMO mount installs through a single roof hole

The antenna fits a standard NMO base, requiring one drilled hole and a secure ground plane on the vehicle roof. Common issues include insufficient tightening of the NMO nut, which lets water enter, and routing the 17-foot cable past sharp metal edges that can abrade the jacket.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 155-160 MHz version or a different frequency range?

This antenna covers 155-160 MHz only. Select it when your radio operates inside that VHF band; otherwise choose a model tuned to your specific frequency range.

What does the 60 W power rating mean once the antenna is installed?

It is the maximum continuous RF power the antenna can handle without damage. Your transmitter must not exceed 60 watts into this antenna.

How does the NMO mount with 17' RG58A/U cable affect the installation?

The NMO base requires a standard 3/4 inch roof hole. The 17-foot RG58A/U coax reaches most mobile radio locations; keep the run as short as practical to minimise loss.
