Ultrabook for mobile professionals

The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 is a 14-inch ultraportable laptop built for users who value a slim aluminium chassis and integrated optical drive. It suits professionals and students needing a lightweight Windows 7 Pro machine for office tasks, web browsing and media playback on the move.

Thermals and power in daily use

The Intel Core i5-2430M dual-core processor runs at up to 3.00 GHz with Intel HD Graphics 3000 for basic workloads. An AMD Radeon HD 6470M discrete GPU handles heavier visual tasks. The 256GB solid-state drive keeps the system responsive without the heat and noise of a mechanical hard drive.

Included drive and memory benefits

A 256GB SSD (listed as 258GB in highlights) provides fast boot and application launch times compared to traditional storage. The 8GB DDR3 RAM supports smooth multitasking across several browser tabs and productivity apps. An internal slot-in DVD reader/writer adds convenient disc playback and burning without external peripherals.

Questions about this item

How do I install a fresh Windows 7 Pro 64-bit image on the 258GB solid state drive without a built-in optical drive?

Use the internal slot-in DVD reader/writer to boot from a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit disc, then select the 258GB solid state drive as the installation target; the common mistake is forgetting to enable legacy boot in the BIOS before the disc will start.

Which component is most likely to need replacement first on this Ultrabook?

The internal slot-in DVD reader/writer has moving parts and a tray mechanism that wear out before the solid state drive or soldered DDR3 memory.

What performance limit appears first during sustained heavy workloads on the AMD Radeon HD 6470M discrete graphics?

Thermal throttling on the AMD Radeon HD 6470M discrete graphics occurs first because the ultra-thin aluminium chassis limits sustained clock speeds under load.
