Product identity and audience

The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 is a 14-inch ultraportable laptop with an Intel Core i5-2450M processor, 6GB DDR3 memory and a 500GB hard drive. It ships with Windows 10 Pro on a French Canadian keyboard and uses AMD Radeon HD6470M dedicated graphics with 1GB video memory. The aluminium chassis weighs between 4 and 4.9 lbs and includes an internal slot-in DVD writer.

Interface and practical limits

The 1366x768 non-touch display provides standard HD clarity for office tasks and media playback. Three USB ports handle peripherals, while HDMI output connects external monitors or televisions. Wireless Display capability allows cable-free screen sharing to compatible receivers. The mechanical hard drive and optical drive limit peak transfer speeds compared with solid-state storage.

Build, connectors and daily implications

The full aluminium body gives a rigid feel within a profile under one inch thick. Integrated DVD drive adds thickness but removes the need for an external optical unit. Gunmetal finish resists visible wear during frequent transport. French Canadian keyboard layout suits bilingual users but differs from standard US or UK layouts. Bluetooth and webcam support video calls without extra accessories.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 500GB hard drive or a larger capacity?

The 500GB hard drive provides ample space for documents, media and applications without relying on cloud storage.

What does the 3.10 GHz figure mean for everyday speed?

The Intel Core i5-2450M reaches up to 3.10 GHz with Turbo Boost, so single-threaded tasks like web browsing and office apps stay responsive.

How does the USB 3 port perform with external drives?

USB 3.0 delivers up to 5 Gbit/s bandwidth, letting a mechanical external drive read and write near its native speed.
