IdeaPad U400 Ultrabook

The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 is a 14-inch ultrabook built around an Intel Core i5-2450M processor, 6GB of DDR3 memory and a 500GB hard drive. It ships with Windows 7 Professional and an AMD Radeon HD 6470M discrete graphics card. The aluminium chassis weighs between 4 and 4.9 lbs and measures less than an inch thick.

Suited for light productivity and media playback

Buyers who need a compact laptop for document editing, web browsing and DVD playback will find the integrated slot-in optical drive and HDMI output convenient. Users who require solid-state storage, a touchscreen, a higher-resolution panel or modern operating-system support should look at other models.

Discrete Radeon HD 6470M graphics

The dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6470M provides separate video memory for smoother video playback and casual gaming compared with integrated graphics alone. This GPU is the key specification that separates the U400 from ultrabooks relying solely on Intel HD Graphics 3000.

Questions about this item

How do I install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Professional on the 500GB hard drive, and what step do people miss?

Boot from USB or DVD, then load the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver before the setup screen appears, otherwise the 500GB drive will not be detected.

Which component will need replacement first after several years of daily use?

The mechanical 500GB hard drive is the part most likely to wear out before the 6GB DDR3 memory or the Radeon HD6470M graphics.

What limit appears first when the Intel Core i5-2450M runs at 3.10 GHz for long periods?

The cooling system in the 14.0 inch chassis reaches its thermal ceiling, so the processor throttles below 3.10 GHz to stay within safe temperatures.
