Ultrabook Design and Mobility

The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 is a new ultraportable laptop built with a full aluminium body in graphite grey. It weighs between four and 4.9 pounds and measures less than an inch thick, making it suited for professionals and students who prioritise mobility. The 14.0 inch non-touch display delivers a 1366x768 resolution for everyday productivity tasks.

Connectivity and Expansion

This laptop provides three USB ports, an HDMI output and an integrated slot-in DVD reader and writer for physical media. Bluetooth and a premium Wi-Fi combo adapter handle wireless peripherals and network access. An integrated HD webcam supports video calls, while the six-row keyboard and touchpad offer standard input. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit comes pre-installed on the Canadian French keyboard layout.

Storage Capacity and Graphics Headroom

The 750GB hard drive and 6GB of DDR3 memory running at 1333 MHz provide ample space for documents and moderate multitasking. The AMD Radeon HD6470M discrete graphics card with 1GB VRAM handles light creative work and HD video playback. Buyers who need faster boot times, larger memory capacity or modern graphics performance for current games will find this configuration limiting.

Questions about this item

How hot does the Core i5-2450M get when running at 3.10 GHz for hours?

The aluminium chassis spreads heat, but sustained turbo speeds will warm the palm rest and keyboard deck noticeably after long sessions.

Does the fan stay quiet during all-day office work?

The single fan spins up under load; at idle it is barely audible, but continuous video or compile tasks raise the noise to a low whoosh.

Will my existing DDR3-1333 SO-DIMM modules work if I want more than 6GB?

The board accepts DDR3-1333 SO-DIMMs; the two slots support up to 8GB total, so a single 4GB stick can be added alongside the soldered 2GB.
