14-inch Ultrabook for mobile professionals

The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 is a new 14.0-inch ultraportable laptop finished in gunmetal aluminium. It runs Windows 8 Pro on an Intel Core i5-2450M processor with 6GB of DDR3 memory at 1333 MHz. A 750GB hard drive provides the primary storage, while AMD Radeon HD6470M discrete graphics with 1GB VRAM drive the 1366x768 non-touch display.

Suits travellers needing an optical drive.

This model suits users who still read or write DVDs thanks to the internal slot-in drive, and who value a full-size keyboard in a sub-5 lb chassis. Buyers who want solid-state storage, a higher-resolution panel, or a touchscreen should look at alternative configurations.

750GB mechanical drive defines storage speed

The single specification that decides fit is the 750GB hard disk drive; it sets boot and load times well behind solid-state alternatives. If workflow depends on fast random access, this drive type is the limiting factor.

Questions about this item

How do I upgrade the 6GB DDR3 memory in the IdeaPad U400, and which slot is commonly missed?

The 6GB DDR3 at 1333 MHz uses two slots; the second slot sits under the keyboard deck, so removing only the bottom panel leaves half the memory inaccessible.

Which component in the U400 will most likely need replacement first?

The 750GB mechanical hard drive has moving parts and a finite lifespan, unlike the soldered CPU or the Radeon HD6470M graphics.

What thermal limit appears first during a long render on the Core i5-2450M?

The 3.10 GHz turbo clock cannot be sustained; the chip drops to its base frequency once the cooling system saturates.
