15.6" FHD Gaming Laptop

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 is a new 15.6-inch laptop built for gaming and multimedia work. It runs Windows 8.1 Pro on an Intel Core i7-3630QM processor with 16GB of DDR3 memory. The 1920x1080 non-touch display and discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT650M graphics target users who need portable performance for creative applications and play.

Discrete GT650M Graphics

The single specification that defines this machine is the NVIDIA GeForce GT650M discrete graphics card. It provides dedicated video memory and processing power separate from the CPU, which is the requirement for running 3D titles and GPU-accelerated creative software at the native 1920x1080 resolution. Systems relying only on integrated graphics cannot meet that need.

1TB SSD and 16GB RAM

A 1TB solid-state drive supplies capacity for a large library of games, media files and project assets with fast boot and load times. Sixteen gigabytes of system memory allows multiple applications and browser tabs to stay open alongside a game. The GT650M and i7-3630QM combination will run out of headroom on modern titles that demand newer shader features or more video memory than this card provides.

Questions about this item

How does the Core i7-3630QM at 3.4 GHz turbo handle games and creative work once it is inside the Y500?

The quad-core CPU reaches 3.4 GHz turbo, giving strong single-thread speed for older titles and responsive performance in photo or video editing on the 15.6" FHD panel.

What does the USB 3.0 port actually deliver for external drives and peripherals?

USB 3.0 provides up to 5 Gbps theoretical bandwidth, so large file transfers to external SSDs are noticeably quicker than USB 2.0.

Will the 15.6-inch chassis fit in a standard laptop backpack or sleeve?

At 15.6 inches and weighing up to 5.9 lbs, it fits most 15-inch laptop compartments but check sleeve depth for the Blu-ray Ultrabay.
