Gaming and multimedia laptop

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 is a 15.6 inch laptop built for gaming and multimedia work. It runs on an Intel Core i7-3630QM processor with 16GB of DDR3 memory and a 500GB solid state drive. Discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT650M graphics handle visuals on a 1920x1080 non-touch display. Windows 10 Home 64-bit comes pre-installed.

Thermals and power in daily use

The system delivers fast boot times and swift data transfer through USB 3.0 ports. Discrete graphics and a quad-core processor up to 3.4GHz draw more power under load, so expect noticeable fan activity during extended gaming sessions. Battery life will vary with workload intensity. Blu-ray drive operation adds extra heat when reading or writing discs.

Build, connectors and day-to-day implications

A backlit keyboard and ThinkPad UltraNav touchpad support work in low light. HD webcam, Bluetooth 4 and premium JBL speakers with Dolby Home Theater cover calls and media. The Ultrabay slot allows the optical drive to be swapped for other modules. At 5 to 5.9 lbs the chassis is substantial for a 15.6 inch device, so daily carry requires a sturdy bag.

Questions about this item

How do I install the Blu-ray drive into the Ultrabay and what step do people miss?

Slide the Blu-ray drive into the Ultrabay slot until it clicks, then secure the latch; the step most users miss is fastening that latch so the drive stays seated during movement.

What maintenance will the 16GB DDR3 memory and 500GB SSD need later?

The 16GB DDR3 is soldered and not upgradeable, while the 500GB SSD has no moving parts — just keep firmware current and leave 10–15% free space for wear levelling.

Which limit appears first during long gaming sessions on the GT650M?

The GT650M hits its thermal ceiling before the Core i7-3630QM throttles, so sustained loads will see GPU clock reduction first.
