Product identity

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 is a 15.6 inch gaming and multimedia laptop powered by an Intel Core i7-3630QM processor, 8GB of DDR3 memory and a discrete NVIDIA GT650M graphics card. It ships with a 1TB solid state drive, a 1920x1080 non-touch display and Windows 8.1 64-bit pre-installed. This configuration targets users who want a single portable machine for gaming, content creation and general productivity.

Sustained load behaviour

The quad-core processor reaches speeds up to 3.4GHz to handle processor intensive applications and extreme gaming workloads. The discrete GT650M graphics card delivers consistent frame rates during extended sessions without relying on integrated graphics. Fast boot times and swift data transfer via USB 3.0 keep the storage subsystem responsive when large project files or game assets are loaded repeatedly.

Thermals noise and power

The chassis is built to manage heat from the discrete GPU and high-performance CPU during normal use, though fan activity will increase under heavy graphics or audio workloads. Dolby Home Theater and premium JBL speakers provide immersive sound without requiring external audio hardware. The Blu-ray RW drive and backlit keyboard add functionality while the UltraBay slot offers flexibility for future expansion.

Questions about this item

Does the Core i7-3630QM and GT650M combination run hot or loud when the laptop is under load all day?

The 15.6 inch chassis uses a single discrete GT650M graphics card and a quad-core i7-3630QM, so sustained gaming will raise fan speed and surface temperature.

What must I already own to use the Ultrabay slot for a second GT650M or extra storage?

The Ultrabay accepts a second GT650M or a drive caddy; neither is included, so you need to buy the matching module separately.

Will my older USB 2.0 peripherals work with the three USB 3.0 ports on this Y500?

Yes, the three USB 3.0 ports are backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices such as mice, keyboards and external drives.
