Refurbished ThinkPad T420 with Core i5-2520M

This refurbished 14.1-inch ThinkPad T420 runs a dual-core Intel Core i5-2520M processor with 3 MB L3 cache and 4 GB of installed memory across two occupied slots. It ships with Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit and a 250 GB hard drive. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 drives the 1366 x 768 non-touch display.

Upgrade path from older Core 2 Duo

The Sandy Bridge architecture delivers a clear step up in multi-threaded responsiveness for office suites, web browsing and legacy business applications. The jump is worth it when moving from a machine that struggles with modern 64-bit software or lacks 802.11a/b/g/n wireless and Gigabit LAN. Buyers needing SSD speed, discrete graphics or USB 3.0 should look elsewhere.

4 GB memory and 250 GB HDD capacity

The 4 GB configuration handles typical productivity workloads and light multitasking; the board supports up to 8 GB if both modules are replaced. Shared graphics memory reduces available RAM under heavier visual tasks. The 250 GB mechanical drive stores documents and local archives but will fill quickly with large media libraries or virtual machines.

Questions about this item

What RAM type and maximum capacity does the T420/i52.5/4/250 support?

It has two slots filled with 2 GB modules totalling 4 GB, and the manufacturer lists a maximum of 8 GB.

How is the operating system installed on this refurbished unit, and what step is often missed?

Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit comes pre-installed; the step many skip is running Windows Update until no important updates remain.

Which storage drive will need replacement first, and what are the specs?

The 250 GB mechanical hard drive is the only drive fitted; it has no SSD, so the HDD is the component most likely to wear out.
