14-inch ThinkPad for Windows 7 workflows

This Lenovo ThinkPad T450 ships new with Windows 7 Professional installed. The 14.0-inch non-touch display runs at 1600 x 900 resolution. An Intel Core i5-5300U dual-core processor at 2.30 GHz works with 8 GB of memory and a 256 GB SSD. Integrated HD Graphics 5500 handles the visual output. IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in.

Thermals, noise and power in daily use

The 3-cell lithium-ion battery powers the ultrabook chassis weighing 3.81 lb. With no optical drive and integrated graphics, the system draws modest power during typical office tasks. Fan activity stays low when processing documents or browsing on the 1600 x 900 screen. The compact 14.0-inch form factor limits sustained heavy loads.

256 GB SSD as the capacity decider

The single solid-state drive provides 256 GB of total storage. Buyers who need more space for large media libraries or multiple virtual machines will find this capacity limiting. No second drive bay or optical slot exists for expansion. The 8 GB memory is also fixed for the product life.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 256GB SSD and what step is often missed?

The 256GB SSD is already fitted in the 14.0" chassis; no installation is required. If adding a second drive later, remember to disable the internal battery in BIOS before opening the case.

What maintenance will the 3-cell Lithium Ion battery need over time?

The 3-cell Lithium Ion pack will lose capacity after several hundred charge cycles; plan to replace it when run-time drops below your needs.

What thermal limit appears first during a long compile on the i5-5300U?

Sustained load on the 2.30GHz dual-core CPU with HD Graphics 5500 will hit the 45 W package power limit first, causing clock throttling.
