14" ThinkPad T460 for mobile professionals

The Lenovo ThinkPad T460 is a 14.0 inch ultrabook built around an Intel Core i5 6300U processor running at 2.4 GHz. It ships with 8 GB of DDR3 memory and a 128 GB SSD, running Windows 10 Home. The 1920 x 1080 display, integrated Intel HD Graphics 520, and carbon-fibre reinforced chassis suit mobile professionals who need a durable, lightweight workstation.

Sustained workload behaviour

Under continuous load the dual-core i5 6300U maintains its base frequency while the integrated HD Graphics 520 handles typical business graphics without a discrete GPU. The 8 GB DDR3 ceiling limits the number of heavy applications that can stay resident, and the 128 GB SSD fills quickly with large project files. Thermal throttling protects the silicon during extended compile or render sessions, so throughput settles below peak burst rates.

Thermals, noise and power

The carbon-fibre lid and magnesium body spread heat across the chassis, keeping surface temperatures moderate during office workloads. Fan noise stays low for typical productivity tasks and rises only when the CPU and iGPU are both stressed. The 128 GB SSD draws minimal power, helping the battery last through a standard workday; the included charger replenishes the pack when mains power is available.

Questions about this item

How loud does the fan get when the Intel Core i5-6300U runs at 2.4GHz all day?

The T460 uses a carbon-fiber-reinforced lid and magnesium chassis to spread heat, so the fan stays quiet during typical office workloads on the Intel HD Graphics 520.

Which cables or docks do I need to connect two external monitors to the HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs?

You only need an HDMI cable for one screen and a Mini DisplayPort cable or adapter for the second; both ports are built into the laptop.

Will my existing DDR3 SODIMM modules work if I want to expand the 8GB memory later?

Yes, the system uses DDR3 memory, so compatible SODIMM sticks can be added to the available slot.
