Business laptop for mobile professionals

The ThinkPad T480s combines an Intel Core i7-8550U processor with 24 GB of DDR4 memory and a 256 GB SSD in a 14-inch chassis. A 1920 x 1080 IPS matte display, fingerprint reader and Windows 7 Professional complete the specification. It is aimed at users who need a lightweight system for office productivity and secure log-in on the move.

Sustained workload behaviour

The quad-core i7-8550U runs at a 1.80 GHz base frequency and can reach 4.0 GHz under load. Integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics handle everyday visual tasks without a discrete GPU. Thunderbolt support provides up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth for external docks or storage during long sessions.

Upgrade context

This configuration replaces an older ultrabook limited to 16 GB of memory or a slower dual-core processor. The jump is worthwhile when workflows regularly exceed 16 GB of RAM or when Thunderbolt docking becomes a daily requirement. Buyers who need more internal storage or a newer Windows licence should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

How much heat and noise should I expect from the i7-8550U when the laptop runs all day?

The i7-8550U operates at a 1.80 GHz base frequency and can reach 4.0 GHz under load, so sustained workloads will warm the chassis and spin the fan, but the ultrabook-class design keeps both within typical office limits.

Which peripherals or docks do I already need to use the Thunderbolt 3 port on this ThinkPad?

You need Thunderbolt 3-compatible cables, monitors or docks with USB-C connectors to exploit the 40 Gbps bandwidth; legacy USB-A devices work through the four standard USB ports instead.

Will my older USB-A keyboard and mouse work alongside the new Thunderbolt 3 dock on this T480s?

Yes, the four USB ports accept existing USB-A peripherals while the Thunderbolt 3 port handles the dock, so both generations of accessories operate simultaneously.
