ThinkPad T480s with 8th Gen i7

The Lenovo ThinkPad T480s is a 14-inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i7-8550U processor running at 1.80 GHz with a 4.0 GHz maximum turbo. It ships with 12 GB of DDR4 memory and a 128 GB SSD. The matte IPS display shows 1920 x 1080 resolution. Windows 7 Professional 64-bit is pre-installed. A fingerprint reader and 4G LTE WWAN are included.

Thunderbolt 3 at 40 Gbps and USB 4.1

The single Thunderbolt 3 port delivers up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth for data and video while supplying power. Bluetooth 4.1 handles short-range peripherals. Only four USB ports are provided in total, so dock or hub expansion is likely if you connect several devices. The integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics drive the internal panel and external displays through the Thunderbolt connection.

Upgrade from 7th Gen dual-core or 8 GB RAM

Moving from a 7th generation dual-core U-series chip to the 8550U adds two more cores for threaded workloads. The jump from 8 GB to 12 GB DDR4 helps with virtual machines and large spreadsheets. Buyers who need more storage than 128 GB or a newer Windows licence should look elsewhere. The 21 MIL-SPEC tests confirm rugged build quality for mobile professionals.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 12 GB DDR4 configuration or look for a larger memory option?

The 12 GB DDR4 is soldered and not user-upgradable, so choose it only if your workload fits within that limit.

What does the 4.0 GHz turbo figure mean for daily work on the i7-8550U?

The processor can reach 4.0 GHz on one core for short bursts, speeding single-threaded tasks like spreadsheet recalculation.

What does the Thunderbolt 3 port actually deliver on this T480s?

The USB-C port supports Thunderbolt 3 at up to 40 Gbps, enabling dual 4K displays and fast external storage.
