14-inch business notebook

The Lenovo ThinkPad T490 is a 14-inch notebook built for professional use. It runs Windows 10 Pro on an Intel Core i7-8565U processor with four cores and a 4.6GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 16GB of DDR4 memory and a 2TB NVMe solid-state drive. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics handle the visual output.

Suits mobile professionals.

This configuration suits mobile professionals who need a lightweight 14-inch chassis with a fingerprint reader, Thunderbolt connectivity and a 720p webcam for video calls. The IPS panel provides wide viewing angles for collaborative work. Buyers who need a discrete graphics card for rendering or gaming should look at a different system. The integrated graphics and non-touch display also limit suitability for stylus-based creative work.

2TB NVMe SSD decides storage capacity

The single specification that decides whether this is the right part is the 2TB NVMe solid-state drive. It determines the total high-speed storage available for the operating system, applications and large project files. No mechanical hard drive is present, so all capacity comes from this single NVMe device. Verify that two terabytes meets your workflow requirements before purchase.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2TB NVMe drive in the T490 and which step do people skip?

The drive fits the M.2 slot under the bottom cover; the step often missed is removing the battery connector before inserting the NVMe stick.

What maintenance will the 16GB DDR4 memory need later?

The memory is soldered to the board so it cannot be upgraded; only a board-level repair would change capacity.

What limit appears first on the i7-8565U during a long compile job?

The 1.80 GHz base clock drops under sustained load once the cooling reaches its thermal ceiling.
