ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 5

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 5 is a 14-inch ultraportable laptop built for professionals who need a durable, lightweight machine running Windows 7 Professional. It integrates an Intel Core i7-7600U processor, a 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD and 8GB of memory. The carbon-fibre reinforced chassis passes 12 military-grade requirements and more than 200 durability tests while weighing 2.49 lbs.

Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C limits

The single Thunderbolt 3 port delivers up to 40Gbps of bandwidth for data and video, yet it remains the only such interface on the system. Peripherals that require dual Thunderbolt chains or external GPU enclosures needing more than one lane cannot be supported. Four USB ports in total provide legacy connectivity, but only the Type-C port carries the Thunderbolt protocol.

Soldered 8GB memory constraint

The 8GB of system memory is soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Workloads that regularly exceed this capacity — such as large virtual machines, heavy compilation or extensive multitasking — will hit a hard ceiling. Buyers who anticipate needing more RAM should select a different platform.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 1TB NVMe model or a smaller capacity?

The 1TB NVMe drive gives you ample room for the OS, applications and large project files without needing external storage.

What does the 3.9 GHz turbo figure mean in daily use?

The Core i7-7600U can reach 3.9 GHz for short bursts, speeding up single-thread tasks like compiling or spreadsheet recalculation.

What does Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C actually cap at?

Thunderbolt 3 on this X1 Carbon runs at up to 40 Gbps, so external SSDs, docks or dual 4K displays share that bandwidth.
