Carbon-fibre ultraportable for mobile professionals

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5 is a 14-inch laptop built around an Intel Core i7-7500U processor running up to 3.5 GHz. It ships with 8 GB of memory and a 256 GB NVMe PCIe solid-state drive. The chassis combines carbon-fibre reinforcement with a magnesium alloy roll-cage tested against twelve military-grade requirements and more than 200 durability checks while weighing 2.49 lbs.

WQHD IPS display and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity

The 14.0-inch IPS panel delivers a 2560 x 1440 resolution without touch input. A Thunderbolt 3 port over USB-C provides up to 40 Gbps of data bandwidth and supports charging, offering four times the data throughput of earlier USB-C implementations. Wireless peripherals connect through Bluetooth 4.1, and the integrated webcam and UltraNav touchpad handle video calls and navigation.

8 GB memory and 256 GB storage for mainstream

Eight gigabytes of RAM and a 256 GB NVMe drive comfortably run office suites, web browsers and lightweight development tools on Windows 7 Professional. Heavier multitasking with large datasets, virtual machines or media editing will exhaust the available memory and storage headroom. Buyers who need more storage or higher memory capacity should consider other configurations.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 256 GB NVMe PCIe SSD version or look for a larger capacity?

The 256 GB NVMe PCIe SSD is the only capacity listed for this model. It provides fast boot and load times for the operating system and core applications. If you store large media libraries locally, plan to add external storage.

What does the Core i7-7500U at up to 3.5 GHz deliver in daily work?

The dual-core i7-7500U with Turbo up to 3.5 GHz handles office suites, web browsing and light creative tasks smoothly. Paired with 8 GB RAM and the NVMe drive, the system feels responsive for typical business workloads.

What can the Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port actually do at 40 Gbps?

The Thunderbolt 3 port supports data transfer up to 40 Gbps, drives two 4K displays, and charges the laptop through the same USB-C connector. It also connects to docks and external GPUs that use the Thunderbolt protocol.
