X1 Carbon 5 new laptop

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5 is a new 14-inch laptop built on a carbon-fibre reinforced chassis with a magnesium alloy roll-cage. It passes more than 200 durability tests and meets 12 military-grade requirements while weighing only 2.49 lbs. The system ships with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed.

8 GB memory 500 GB SSD

Eight gigabytes of memory and a 500 GB solid-state drive provide responsive performance for everyday productivity and light multitasking. The 14.0-inch WQHD IPS panel delivers a 2560 x 1440 resolution for sharp text and clear visuals. Memory is not user-expandable, so the 8 GB ceiling is fixed for the life of the device.

Thunderbolt 3 USB-C charging

A Thunderbolt 3 port enables up to 40 Gbps data transfer and USB-C charging with compatible docks and peripherals. The upgrade from earlier models is worthwhile for users who need the lighter 2.49 lb chassis and the single-cable dock connection. Buyers who require more than 500 GB of internal storage or more than 8 GB of RAM should consider other configurations.

Questions about this item

Will the USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 port work with my older USB 3.0 dock and monitors?

The Thunderbolt 3 port uses a USB-C connector and is backward compatible with USB 3.0 docks and displays, though they will run at USB 3.0 speeds rather than the full 40 Gbps Thunderbolt bandwidth.

How can I verify the Intel Core i7-7600U is reaching its 3.9 GHz turbo frequency under load?

Open Task Manager or a monitoring tool such as HWMonitor while running a demanding task; the CPU clock should show speeds up to 3.9 GHz on the performance cores when thermal headroom allows.

Does the box include a Thunderbolt 3 cable for 40 Gbps data, or only the power adapter?

The laptop ships with a USB-C power adapter for charging; a certified Thunderbolt 3 cable capable of 40 Gbps data transfer is not included and must be purchased separately.
