Business ultrabook for mobile professionals

The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 is a 12.5-inch business ultrabook built for professionals who need a durable, portable Windows device. It runs Windows 8.1 Pro on an Intel Core i7-4600U processor with 8GB of DDR3 memory and a 256GB solid-state drive. The chassis is MIL-SPEC tested against eight environmental parameters including high pressure, humidity, vibration and temperature shock up to 15,000 ft.

Touch display and spill-resistant keyboard change

The 1920 x 1080 FHD IPS touchscreen adds direct on-screen interaction for presentations and annotation work. A carbon-fibre roll cage reinforces the frame without adding bulk, keeping weight between 3 and 3.9 lbs. The six-row spill-resistant keyboard includes backlighting for low-light environments, while Bluetooth 4.0 handles wireless peripherals.

Straightforward deployment with limited expansion

Windows 8.1 Pro arrives pre-installed so the system is ready for domain joining and encryption policies out of the box. Only two USB ports are provided, so users who need multiple simultaneous peripherals should plan for a hub. The 256GB drive and soldered 8GB memory cannot be upgraded later, which limits long-term storage and multitasking headroom.

Questions about this item

Is the 8 GB DDR3 memory soldered or can I add a stick later?

The X240 has 8 GB DDR3 soldered to the board and no SO-DIMM slot, so the memory cannot be upgraded after purchase.

What stops the Core i7-4600U from holding its 3.3 GHz boost during long renders?

The 15 W TDP and compact 12.5" chassis limit sustained turbo; the CPU will throttle to its base clock once the thermal budget is reached.

How loud does the fan get and how hot does the base feel when the ultrabook runs all day?

Under continuous load the single fan spins up to an audible whine and the carbon-fibre underside becomes noticeably warm, though still within normal operating temperatures.
